Hello Lincoln Families,
Our class earned an "extra recess"! We had 100% participation in the Student-Led Conferences! The students want to bring in bikes, skateboards, or sporting equipment. The weather is supposed to be amazing this week. Let's plan on Wednesday, April 12th. We also don't have a late start on this day. If your child wants to bring in a bike that's great. Skateboards can be brought up to the classroom and stored there. Keep in mind if you require them to wear helmets, pads, or any protective equipment that will be up to you. If you could make sure the equipment is here first thing in the morning, that would be great. They are very excited!
Sarett Field Trip: We will be going to Sarett Nature Center on Thursday, April 27th from 10:30-12:00. We will have a snack at school before we go and return for lunch. Students will explore the 4 different ecosystems that we have in Michigan. Everybody needs to dress for the weather and hiking. Parents are welcome to meet us there and join our hike!

Academic Agenda
Reading: The new learning focus will be text structures, including time order, compare and contrast, & cause and effect in a text. Using the data from the Fountas & Pinnell reading assessments, NWEA, and conferring conferences, we are working on what reading strategies and goals each student needs. These strategies are intended to be added to their "reading tool kit". These mini-lessons are used as a focus for many reading strategies. It's possible to use more than one reading strategy at a time. These strategies cover comprehension, accuracy, fluency, and expanding vocabulary.
Writing: Students have been working on their historical events and essay! This is an integration of the Social Studies and writing curriculum. The events include Underground Railroad, The Great Migration, Ellis Island (Immigration) Dust Bowl, and the Orphan Train. Ask your child what event they picked! After students collect the research they will write an informational essay.

Science: I have decided to wait on the last Science unit. We will begin after we have finished our government unit. In this unit, students explore energy! Students investigate how energy is stored, how it can make objects move, and how collisions transfer energy between objects. Students also construct devices that convert energy from one form into another, such as heat into motion and electricity into light.
Social Studies: We have begun researching a historical event that reflects our Social Studies and writing curriculum. This includes writing an informational essay from the research. The events include Underground Railroad, The Great Migration, Ellis Island (Immigration) Dust Bowl, and the Orphan Train. We have also begun the "Our Federal Government" unit this week. This will help prepare students for vocabulary and background knowledge before our Lansing trip!
