Hello Lincoln Families!

Here are some reminders: Please make sure you ask your child about what he/she is reading. Each student should have a "good fit" book in their backpack. Thank you for encouraging your child to read each day/night for 20 minutes or more at home. You can also consider having your child read a certain amount of pages or chapters. This week, we discussed that everyone has different reading goals. So the goal could be based on minutes, pages, or chapters. We know the ultimate goal is for every child to have a lifelong love of reading! Once the reading is finished, students need to record the minutes and pages read. Thank you for signing your initials on the bookmarker. This is one example of how students continue to earn "yards" and eventually score a touchdown! Please continue to have conversations each day about what is happening in our beautiful classroom!

Snacks in the Classroom

Please make sure that everyday snacks are quick and easy for your child to handle. For example please no yogurt, pudding, uncut fruit, or messy items for everyday snacks. This avoids spilling on our school devices, furniture, etc. These snacks work better in the lunchroom. Thank you for your understanding. 

Birthdays

We love to celebrate birthdays! For students who would like to celebrate their birthdays in our class please bring in non-food items. For example instead of cupcakes maybe pencils. Sometimes parents put together little gift bags. These are just ideas. There is no obligation to send anything!

This week's academic focus

Reading: This last week I began conferring with readers using their "good fit" books. These conferences help me better understand each student as a reader. Over the next two weeks, I will also do reading assessments. Using the data from the Fountas & Pinnell reading assessments, NWEA, and conferring conferences, I am working on what reading strategies and goals each student needs. These strategies are intended to be added to their "reading tool kit".  Over the next four weeks, I will read Winn Dixie, by Kate DiCamillo as an interactive read-aloud. These mini-lessons will focus on many reading strategies. It's possible to use more than one reading strategy at a time. These strategies cover comprehension, accuracy, fluency, and expanding vocabulary. Students will be presenting their reading goals at their student-led conferences. 

Writing: We will be focusing on sentence structure and brainstorming strategies. Then I will write begin lessons on teaching how to write personal narratives.

Math: Unit 1 will begin this week! In this section, students revisit the ideas of area and factors from grade 3 and encounter the idea of multiples. They begin by building rectangles given specific side lengths and identifying possible areas when only one side length is known. Students use tiles and diagrams to build their understanding before learning new terminology. Next, students build rectangles given a certain area. They see that the side lengths of the rectangles represent the factor pairs of the given area value. Students also observe the commutative property of multiplication when they see that rectangles with the same pair of side lengths have the same area, regardless of their orientation.

Shuttle riders should head outside at 3:30 on full days and 11:55 on half days.
